Unfocused at the office and home office? Do this instead

A hybrid workday can be a gift – or a disaster. Without a clear framework, you risk losing track of things, misunderstanding your team, being constantly interrupted at home, and losing valuable work time.

Flexibility is great, but without structure, flexibility becomes just another word for clutter.

Here are six tips to reduce friction and make hybrid work productive.

Choose specific days to go to the office

«Taking it as it comes» only creates confusion. Your team has no idea when they can collaborate with you physically, and planning becomes difficult.

Set regular office days and stick to them. Consistency cuts down on misunderstandings and eliminates unnecessary friction.

Clear communication

When no one knows when you're available, you lose control of your calendar. Important meetings crash with focused work, and your workday becomes jam-packed with interruptions.

Be crystal clear about when you are available at home.

Use calendar invites to block out time for work and meetings – so everyone can see it.

Without this, your entire day will be governed by other people's priorities.

Dedicated workspace

Working from the couch, the kitchen table, or with the TV on in the background is a surefire path to low productivity and high frustration.

Get a dedicated workspace at home, preferably in a separate room, that is free from distractions.

It creates a clear boundary between work and private life – and prevents work from flowing into your free time.

Portable work setup

If you constantly have to spend time setting up or moving equipment, your workflow will fall apart.

Important files can be left behind in the office, and notes get lost in piles of paper.

Have a portable setup: a laptop that can easily connect to monitors both at home and in the office, and digitize notes and documents.

Then you have everything you need – no matter where you are.

The right time for meetings

Morning meetings stifle the opportunity to work on the most important tasks when your mind is most clear.

Schedule meetings for the afternoon, and preferably on days when you are in the office.

This allows you to use your morning hours for critical work, while making the most of your office hours for collaboration.

Communicate with those at home

When you work from home and those you live with don't know when you need peace and quiet, interruptions are inevitable.

The result? Half-finished tasks, stress, and afternoons that turn into more work.

Set clear boundaries: tell us when you are working, stick to fixed working hours, and switch off completely when you are finished.

Without this, you risk that work will take over your free time and that you will never get real rest.

A hybrid workday can either give you the best of both worlds, or take away your control over both work and leisure.

The difference lies in whether you take these steps, or let hybrid work become a source of inefficiency.
